lyrics

once upon a time I made a new friend
she was the kind who could laugh and smile at all the stupid things I said
and smile she did as I went on to say what a good time I had when I walked with her and talked with her
such a good friend

we spent a summer week on a mountainside
picking the fruits of the earth for the meals we cooked at night
stuffed bell peppers with wild mushrooms inside
more than the food we shared, it was joy and care
such a good time

within a week I lost that same friend
she grew tragically withdrawn and that's how that story ends
it's so rare for me to find people with whom I connect with
and it's hard to keep on trying when I see how it ends
and so I'm left to wonder what it is about me
that the people I am drawn to the most are so quick for forget about me
if there's some way I could grow well then please tell me
there's a closeness that I need that keeps escaping me
when she left she didn't even say goodbye
I'll never hear from her ever again
it's just a memory
that's all that's left with me

I never hear from most of my old friends
from before I moved from the place
where we spent our days working on a band
riding bikes, cooking meals, going to the beach,
and watching each other dream
but I never dreamed that we'd drift apart
are we just like leaves blowing in the wind
I never thought we'd be losing touch
just as soon as I was out of sight
what's it mean to be a friend?
was it more than just convenience?
what do I need in a friend?
was it more than just being there?
what do I want?

Feeling like there's someone who'll cheer me up
when I can't see how beautiful life can be
Feeling like somebody appreciates
me for who I am as much as I do them
Feeling like there's someone who cares for me
and wants to help me become who I want to be
